Warbirds over Wanaka 2006

The Church of the Good Shepherd, at Lake Tekapo.

This P40 was restored in New Zealand by Pioneer Aero Restorations Limited . They have a good section on their website devoted to it, click here to see it (opens in a new browser window).I took this in the setting sun on the Thursday night before the show.

As we arrived for the friday morning practice day, the RAAF were finishing their F-111C display... just amazing! They repeated the display in the afternoon.

This Yak 3 is a conversion from a Yak 11 radial engined trainer. It seems to have a subtly different nose profile to the new build one seen here in previous years. This is his second landing... first being about 3 meters prior to this one. :-) The grass runway was quite bumpy, quite a few aircraft bounced at this point.
This is a replica of Burt Munro's motorcycle, built for the movie "The World's fastest Indian". This raced along the runway as part of the lunch time entertainment.
I-153 and I-16

  Spitfire and Hurricane

Not a sharp photo, but a good view!

Yak 3

Aircraft photography is like clay bird shooting - it's better to wait until they're on the ground! I hope the Hurricane stays in New Zealand, it is a very special aircraft.

The Polipads did a terrific display...

  ...as did the Roaring Forties!

  The sublime Hawker Hunter.

The newest P-51 in the country?

The NZ Army had two LAV 3's on display. interesting how many people had to tap the pointy bit to see how solid it was!
